Doug Smallwood, Standard Concrete's Operation Manager Retires

Doug Smallwood, a long time employee of Standard Concrete Products, and recipient of the 2007 Extra Yard Award given by CalCIMA (California Construction and Industrial Materials Association), which recognizes outstanding achievement in the construction and materials industry, retired in December.

Doug started in the industry with G & E Ready Mixed Concrete in September, 1971. He started as a “yard boy” before working his way up through the ranks of driver, dispatcher, and batch man. He became the Plant Manager of G & E’s Long Beach plant in 1973, where he remained until 1994. In 1986, Standard Concrete Products purchased G & E Ready Mix from the Gibson Family and Doug had continued his employment with the company.  In 1994, Doug was promoted to Operations Manager for Standard Concrete and was re-assigned to Standard’s main office in Santa Ana, California. He had held that position since that time and until his retirement.

Doug has been married to Diane for 36 years and has raised three successful boys. He became a Grandfather for the first time, to Caleb (the joy of his life) in 2006 and is immensely enjoying that role.  We wish Doug well in his retirement.

Lehigh Pacific - US Cement Sales, Technical Services and Terminals Team Bonds in Reno

Twenty-four management, sales, technical services and terminal employees of Lehigh Pacific met in Reno, NV recently for a long overdue meeting.  Much information was shared on market challenges and opportunities.  It was the first meeting of staff from Lehigh Southwest Cement and Lehigh Northwest Cement.  Led by Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Lehigh Pacific Cement Sales, Bill Boughton, the team learned a lot about the western United States cement market and a few things about their co-workers.

One afternoon was dedicated to a bonding and team building exercise--bowling!  For fun, teams were mixed among the two companies and every fifth frame was played using the "off" hand.  All agreed, the meeting was a fantastic success and all vowed to return next year, perhaps at a Lehigh facility city so that a tour of Lehigh's plants/terminals could be conducted.
