Careers in the Cement Industry

The cement industry can provide you with a long-term, challenging career path. Diverse and skilled groups of people keep a large cement plant operating. Here is an overview of jobs available in the cement industry:

Human Resources, Administration, and Support

General management, accounting, and HR functions provide support for plant operations. Positions vary from accountants, purchasing agents and payroll to office administration and support staff. Depending on the position, the requirements may include a university degree, college diploma or on site training. These jobs could be located at one of our cement plants or at other administrative offices in California.

Information Technology Professionals

We distribute I.T. staff throughout California to provide sophisticated and reliable technologies in support of our businesses. We employ technical and business applications professionals in a challenging and dynamic environment.

Chemical or Process Engineers

The operation of a cement kiln requires control of a very large-scale, complex chemical reaction. Process engineers are required to monitor and control the properties of the process on a constant basis. All modern cement plants are equipped with X-ray spectrometers and laboratories to maintain the quality of the final product. Automatic sampling systems are combined with computer analysis to minimize variation from standards. Process engineers monitor the long-term characteristics of the plant and design changes to the process, to take advantage of new technologies or to improve production.

Electrical Engineers

Because of the significance of the electrical equipment needed to operate a cement plant, electrical engineers may be needed to design changes and upgrade electrical systems at the plant.

Process Control Engineers and Technicians

Modern cement plants are highly automated and often at the forefront of computer technology. Computer control and monitoring equipment allow a cement plant to run at optimum efficiency while following the best environmental procedures. Design and upgrading of these control systems and logic are ongoing requirements.

Mechanical Engineers

Because of the size and power of the motors, fans and other equipment in a cement plant, many positions require knowledge of mechanical engineering.  Engineers arrange for the scheduled maintenance of the running equipment based on usage. They also design changes to equipment and additions to production lines.

Plant Management

A cement plant is managed by a team of skilled individuals with responsibilities for plant maintenance, production, environmental controls, shipping and product quality. From department managers and line supervisors to the plant manager, everyone  plays a significant role in the productive operation of these complex manufacturing facilities.

Production

Cement plants operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Responsibility for plant operation is distributed among many departments, but it is the production department that maintains the kiln operation at peak output, and ensures that it meets environmental requirements. Supervisors coordinate the various departments and make production decisions.

Sales and Marketing

Sales and marketing professionals in the cement industry are always in demand. The ability to interface effectively with ready mix producers, contractors, architects, and transportation personnel, requires sales and marketing professionals with a broad knowledge of the construction industry. Sales, sales management, and marketing personnel all play a significant role in the promotion and sale of a wide range of cement and cementitious products offered by Lehigh Southwest.

Trades

Cement plants may require millwrights, electrical instrumentation technicians, and electricians. Millwrights install and service plant process equipment using cranes and heavy hoists. The motor control centers and power distribution systems are maintained and upgraded by electricians. Heavy equipment such as large loaders and trucks are maintained by heavy-duty mechanics.
